Education as an Advanced Field of Study

Focuses on the critical evaluation, interpretation, and uses of published research in education as a field of study. Offers students an opportunity to explore the relationship between theory and practice and the changing nature of knowledge, to examine peer-reviewed research articles, to learn the “rules” and methods through which these scholarly works are developed, and to begin to apply research findings to real problems and issues in education. As part of this course, students use an ePortfolio as they begin to document their development as scholars, practitioners, and leaders in the field of education.

Developing a Research-Informed Approach to Learning Design

Education as an Advanced Field of Study changed the way I see myself as both a learner and a designer. I came in with very little confidence around research, and I often relied on intuition instead of evidence. This term I learned how to evaluate sources, interpret studies, and use tools like the CRAAP test to understand what makes research trustworthy. Mind-mapping also became a surprising support for me. It helped me organize ideas, make connections, and see patterns that I might have missed before. The assignments that asked me to reflect on my own lived experience helped me engage with the material in a deeper way.

I am proud of the progress I made with APA formatting and research literacy. APA is still something I am practicing, but it no longer feels overwhelming. I also began to see my identity as a designer more clearly. This course helped me recognize that my interest lies in accessibility and designing for diverse learners. Building my ePortfolio gave me the space to express that and to watch my professional story begin to take shape.

Looking ahead, my priorities are to build stronger evidence-based design habits, check sources more carefully, and connect research directly to my design decisions. I want to keep growing my ability to interpret research in a meaningful way and apply it thoughtfully in my work. This course showed me that research is not separate from practice. It is part of how I can design learning experiences that are more inclusive, intentional, and grounded in what actually supports learners.
